Hayley Sofia is a 23 year old Makeup Artist from Toronto, Canada. Hayley got into makeup a few years ago. She made herself a model mayhem account and hit the ground running. “On that site I was able to network with a multitude of photographers and models to help build up my portfolio, and my repertoire. I rarely use that site anymore, but it really helped get my feet wet in the industry.”

Growing up Hayley’s mother was a huge artistic influence in her life. “My mother was a huge influence on my artistic and creative abilities. She was always big into crafting and always let me join in and help her. She also did a lot of face painting, which I loved having her practice on my face. I guess that explains quite a bit.”

Hayley didn’t always want to be a makeup artist, when she was little she initially wanted to become a Marine Biologist.

Then when she was in middle school she started joining school plays because she thought she wanted to act. “That definitely was not my calling, as I found myself enjoying the behind the scenes work, such as makeup, paining scenes, and prop design.”

Hayley took an interest in Cosmetology in high school and then attended a 2-year makeup program at Sheridan College. “I also was hired by a high-end cosmetic retailer before I graduated school, and I received a lot of advanced training and skills from them.” Hayley got her first publication doing hair and makeup for the cover/centerfold model for an issue of Hustler Canada. “I had just finished makeup school, and I was so nervous about really putting my skills to the test. I must have done a great job, because my Mom bought 3 copies!”

Hayley’s kit consists of a lot of prepping products (primers, illuminators, hydrators, etc.)! “They are the most important part of making your makeup look great and last long, even if it’s just faking great skin.”

Hayley sets her self apart from other makeup artist by being easy going, open to idea and not afraid to take on interesting collaborations. “I love collaborating on my creations. Whether it is with a photographer, model, bride, etc., I am so easy going when it comes to helping create the look you want or need. Although my brain is always full of ideas (not only what looks to create, but how to create it, and multi-use products to do so), I truly enjoy trying to create from another person’s perspective. I like a challenge.”

Hayley keeps up with the newest trends and styles by following and subscribing to fashion and beauty magazines and occasionally catching award shows here and there. She incorporates these trends as often as possible.

“My favourite trend right now is definitely the colour trend. It allows you to have more fun and be a bit more creative than everyone else. I find it can jazz up your lips or eye liner for a more fun and unique look.” When she is not busy trend watching she is pulling inspiration from a few of her favourite artists such as the great Kevyn Aucoin and Francois Nars. “Both of them had/have such timeless styles, and left a wonderful legacy that caters to all makeup artists.”

Hayley’s favourite part of the industry is making people happy. “If I can wow a model, who has had her makeup done 1000 times, help a photographer bring their vision to life, make a bride feel like a princess, or simply teach someone simple, natural-looking makeup tricks to make them feel fresh and better about themselves, it makes me feel really good about my job, and that I have made a connection with the person in front of me.”

Outside of Makeup Hayley enjoys baking and cooking. She always enjoys heavy metal music and enjoys going to concerts.

Hayley’s advice to new models: “always take criticism constructively, even if it may sound negative. You are not going to please everyone, so always try to keep a positive attitude, even when someone doesn’t agree with your creative vision. Use it to your advantage to learn something new and build your skills! That being said, you need to be patient. This is a tough industry to catch a break instantly (if at all). You may not always get the gigs you want, and sometimes there can be a lot of competition, but just keep promoting yourself, and always be genuine!”
